Alcohol can make people do some strange things. When this is the case, the police are often notified, and in some cases the ensuing story is one that can be weird, odd, and sometimes downright hilarious. Many of which demonstrate that you do not necessarily need to be driving a car in order to still be charged.
Here are five odd and comical DUI arrests.
#1- “All in the Family”
They say families have to stick together. One family in New Zealand took that a little too far.
In 2011, a 15-year-old boy from the town of South Canterbury was stopped on suspicion of driving drunk. He was arrested after blowing more than three times the legal limit for youths. When he was taken to the police station for processing, the authorities phoned his mother to collect him. On her way to the police station, she too was stopped and arrested after blowing nearly twice the adult limit!
The woman then phoned her husband to collect them both. On his way to the station, the husband was then stopped, where he also tested well over the legal limit and was arrested.
#2- “Playing the Part”
An Ohio college student was arrested for DUI in the early hours of the morning after police spotted him driving the wrong direction down a one-way street. Police found him with an open can of beer in the cup holder, a case on the front seat, and more in the trunk.
The ironic part of the stop: the man was dressed in a breathalyzer costume, complete with a dial with three levels of drunkenness: “Boring,” “Life of the Party,” and “Sotally Tober.” His blood alcohol was found to be almost twice the legal limit for an adult, but since he was found with multiple ID’s on him, he was also cited for underage drinking.
#3- “The Engineering Project”
A UK man was arrested for driving drunk when he was found to be over twice the legal limit while behind the wheel of… a child’s pink electric Barbie toy car. The 40 year old man was studying electrical engineering at Colchester Institute at the time, and had put larger wheels on the car as part of a project he was doing with son, who was studying car mechanics. The Chairman of the bench stated “The vehicle is not even capable of doing the speed of a mobility scooter and could be outrun by a pedestrian.”
The driver was given a three-year ban on his license due to a previous DUI conviction within the last 10 years, according to British DUI law.
Perhaps the best part of this story: the car was impounded by police, but the driver openly hoped he could get it back.
#4- “The La-Z-Boy”
A Minnesota man was arrested in 2008 when he crashed his motorized La-Z-Boy recliner into a parked vehicle. The man had initially driven the easy chair to a bar in the town of Proctor, where he proceeded to drink “eight or nine beers.” His blood alcohol test returned a 0.29 result, more than three times the legal limit.
He was sentenced to 180 days in jail and given two years of probation.
#5- “Why the Long Face?”
A Henagar, Alabama woman was arrested for a DUI while riding her horse through town at midnight. When police initially located her, she refused to stop and dismount from the animal, instead trying to make it run faster. At one point, she even turned the horse into officers and “rammed” a police car.
When authorities finally were able to detain her, they found her also in possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested for DUI, drug possession, resisting arrest, assault, attempting to elude police, and cruelty to animals. It was also discovered later that there was a warrant out for her arrest in a different county for unrelated charges.
